Getting Started
If you are a student who wants to come to study in the United States at an international crossroads, you've come to the right place! Florida International University is located in one of the most exciting cities in the world: Miami; in which you can gain an excellent education, improve your command of the English language, and have fun on our beautiful beaches. General Procedures
To participate in the International Student Exchange Program at FIU, you need to be a student at one of our partner institutions. [Please click here to see if your university is on the list of FIU partner institutions.]
If your school is on the list, the first step is to contact the Office of International Relations or Study Abroad at your home university. If you are not sure how to contact them, email our office at educationabroad@fiu.edu and we will provide you with contact information.
The Coordinator at your home institution will tell you how to apply for the exchange program and will provide you with the FIU International Student Exchange application form once you have been accepted by their office to apply for the program.
All applications for the International Student Exchange Program must be sent to the FIU Office of Education Abroad by the Coordinator of the partner institution. Applications sent by individual students will not be reviewed. Useful Information
FIU Campus Information FIU is made up of two campuses in Miami-Dade County. The main campus, University Park, is located in Southwest Miami on the site of what was once an airport. The U.P. campus houses the majority of FIU’s academic programs and residence hall facilities.
The second campus, Biscayne Bay, is located in North Miami near the city of Aventura. The BBC is home to the School of Journalism and Communications and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, as well as other academic programs. Many courses from departments based at U.P. are offered at BBC, but the majority of courses in Communications and Hospitality are offered only at BBC.
The U.P. and BBC are connected by a shuttle bus that runs approximately every hour. The bus ride takes approximately 45 minutes and costs each way ( roundtrip). Tickets are sold at the Graham University Center (U.P.) and the Wolfe University Center (BBC).
Students planning to take courses in Communications or Hospitality should budget for the shuttle bus.
Accommodations
The Office of Education Abroad requires all International Exchange students to live on campus. Living on campus will provide you with a unique learning experience, where you will have the opportunity to make friends with students from many different cultures and backgrounds, participate in a wide variety of activities, and get involved in sports, cultural and educational programs.
Click here to visit the web site for FIU Housing and Residential Life. Under the information provided for New Applicants, you will be able to view room layouts and rates, living and learning communities, what to bring with you and what you should plan to purchase upon arrival.
Due to the location of, and facilities available at the BBC, students participating in the International Student Exchange program will be housed on the University Park Campus ONLY, regardless of major. Be sure to select your preferences for this campus only. Meal Plans and Campus Dining
Many students choose to purchase a meal plan that allows you to eat in one of the dining facilities on campus. In on-campus accommodations, if a kitchen is not available in your room, there will be a shared cooking facility on your residence hall floor, so purchasing a meal plan is not required. If you are interested in learning more about the meal plan or Campus Dining in general, please visit http://www.campusdish.com/en-us/CSS/FloridaInternationalUniv for more information. Please note that for 2006-2007, the Panther Hall and Lakeview Hall prices includes the flex 10 meal plan. This meal plan is required of students in these halls. Cost of Living
Exchange students pay tuition and fees at their home institution and receive a tuition waiver at FIU. In order to obtain a J-1 Student Visitor visa, students must provide proof of funds to cover the estimated costs of attendance for the semester or academic year. For an estimated cost of living for a year at FIU please click here. This cost of living is estimated with the information provided by the Office of Admissions and International Student and Scholar Services.
